TORREY'S BOOKS AND MORE writes: Guitarist/singer-songwriter for the original Jefferson Airplane, Marty Balin moved on to a solo career after leaving the band in 1978. These mild, squeaky-clean Cool Jazz numbers are a far cry from his Jefferson Airplane contributions (e.g. "Share a Little Joke" and "Volunteers"), and sound more akin to the likes of Steely Dan and Steve Miller than 1960s Psychedelia.
Expert Review by Joe Viglione: I'm the fellow who struck the deal with Wayne Green Enterprises, the visionary who published CD Review magazine. We also did a contract with Randy California and Spirit at the same time, a CD which I produced. This artifact, Better Generation, could have been much more, but it is still an important Balin release as it captured his sound in the 1990s with Kerry Kearney on guitar and his wife, Karen Deal, on keyboards. The recording facility up in Mount Manadanock, New Hampshire, was brand spanking new and the late Jimmy Miller had always advised "don't work with a new studio; let them get all the problems out before you start working there". Well, we didn't have that opportunity as the crew at GWE had stars in their eyes and were desperate to do the recoding there. This wasn't Wayne Green's fault or Marty's fault or mine, the people running the company were simply star struck and put their input in when it wasn't needed. C'est la vie, we've got some new Marty Balin product in the works. This is a great collectible with Marty re-creating some of his classic songs as well as performing some new ones. The title track was a staple in their live show touring behind this disc. | |
